6 Months Already
It’s hard to believe I’ve been in England for 6 months already. If I’m completely honest, 2 of those months have been pretty good, 2 have been alright, and 2 have been pretty shit.
Let’s see what I’ve been up to since my last update.
I got a job doing event waitressing with an event placement company, but wasn’t getting a ton of shifts, but did end up working New Years Eve so didn’t have a very exciting start to the new decade. Was in my flat alone watching Graham Norton and fireworks on TV.
I spent a lot of December and January just walking aimlessly around central London. I took a coach trip out of London beginning of January to Southampton to meet a friend who drove us to Portsmouth where we went to the arcade. I finally got to try a couple cupcake shops in London, they were decent enough. Made it to the science museum, which was pretty fun. I had actually worked an event there so it was nice to actually be able to look at all the stuff a bit closer. I took myself to go to Cirque du Soleil’s Luzia, which was spectacular.
I managed to find another job at Go Ape in Battersea Park, started training at the end of January. The commute was a bitch so I started looking for a new place to live. Met a lot of cool people and had a lot of fun working there. Went to the pub after work and had a games night which was a ton of fun. I managed to find a poutine in London, which made me super happy.
I had a friend working at the show Newsrevue so he invited me to come watch it, and it was entertaining. We had also gone for dinner in Chinatown, Chinese food here isn’t the same as at home so while it was good, it wasn’t exactly what I wanted. But we got bubble waffles and that was totally worth it. I was excepting them to be cool looking but just ok, since that seems to be the trend for a lot of Instagram food but it was delicious and fun.
I managed to find a new temporary place to live, a flat share about a 10 minute walk from work and that was glorious. The place itself wasn’t amazing but not having to commute was great. I also went to the British Museum, which was fairly interesting.
My sister flew over and we went to Scotland for 5 days, which was not nearly enough time but still fun. Saw lots of castles and fancy buildings, and went up the Wallace Monument in Stirling where I proceeded to make fun of my sister for being afraid of heights and clinging to the wall. Saw some sights that supposedly inspired Harry Potter, Greyfriar’s Bobby, and lots of bagpipers. Got a roast dinner, tea and scones, Irn Bru, and a deep fried Mars bar. Went to The Chocolatarium, did an escape room (we barely made it out), and lots and lots of museums. She flew into London so we took the train there and back, and spent her last night at a hotel in central London doing a whirlwind sightseeing tour. Buckingham Palace, Westminster/Big Ben/London Eye, Tower Bridge, Tower of London, stopped for dinner at ‘Spoons, Platform 9 3/4, Milk Train (entertaining and delicious), and Leicester Square (where we got to see some of the fun new character statues).
I finally (and just barely) made it to Warner Bros Studio Tour: The Making of Harry Potter. Even though I was alone I had the best time and hope I can go back again in the winter. I had expected it to be longer but it was still super cool and interesting and informative and magical. Naturally had to buy myself a chocolate frog from the gift shop (I got Devin Whitehorn, creator of the Nimbus Racing Broom Company).
I found myself yet another place to live, this time a flat all to myself. Luckily I managed to move in right before this whole pandemic nonsense started. Though let me tell you, moving into a new flat in the middle of a global crisis is not ideal. I’ve been here for 2 months and I’m still missing things that would make my life better but oh well. Also being furloughed from work and moving into a flat alone means I’ve had no human interaction for 2 months. I’ve been watching a lot of Netflix and occasionally (very very rarely) dragging myself out of the house for a walk.
If you read my last post you also know I celebrated my 30th birthday last month (how is it that is already been almost a month since my birthday? Seriously.). Which was fairly uneventful and rather boring and disappointing. I did get a surprise gift in the mail, which was completely unexpected, from my sister’s bestie (they conspired and I very much appreciated it). Other than that it was pretty much same old, same old.
I managed to behave the first month and not order anything online but I started to cave and have been ordering a few things. Mostly actually cards and things I can mail to other people, which I need to get around to writing in, but I also got myself a cross stitch set. I haven’t started it yet because I still need an embroidery hoop. I really want to get a puzzle but I have no space to complete it so it would be a bit pointless.
Naturally, as have many other people, I’ve had A LOT of things cancelled on me in the last 2 months and it’s super upsetting. Hopefully when all of this is over I’ll be able to go back out and keep exploring London and going to shows. Obviously this is not at all the work abroad experience I was hoping for but just have to hope things will get better and I don’t have to go home early.
