Not the Birthday I was Hoping For

I was hoping to celebrate my 30th birthday last week somewhere exciting. But, as with lots of other things, COVID had other plans. It also meant I wasn’t able to complete my list of 30 things I wanted to do before my birthday.
Unsurprisingly my birthday was rather uneventful. I had a code for 50% off an order that was good until the 23rd so I had my birthday dinner a day early and got pizza. I got a few birthday wishes at midnight from people back home. I needed some groceries, including cupcakes, so I went out to the supermarket in the morning. When I got home I noticed there were packages waiting for me so that was my excitement for the day. I continued with my Castle marathon and looked at my new Thomas Kinkade colouring book! Shout out to my sister and her bestie for conspiring and sending it (along with pencil crayons, of course) to me. I talked to my mom for a bit on the phone and then made French toast for dinner. I had been craving it for a while and finally managed to get all the ingredients I needed. Continued watching Castle until bed time. With an 11:55pm video call from another friend back home. Even though she was cooking dinner she wanted to make it before the end of my birthday. All things considered it wasn’t a totally terrible day. I’m not usually one to make a big deal about my birthday but 30 is a bit of a milestone so I wanted it to be special. Oh well. Just have to make up for it next year.

Now to see how poorly I did on my list of 30 things. I really did set myself up for failure to begin with, and then COVID happened, and then I just gave up.

  • Move to another country (November 22, moved to England!)
  • Visit (at least) one new state (I knew this one wasn’t gonna happen, I had basically a week where I could have accomplished this)
  • Visit (at least) one new country (managed to get to Scotland before travel bans were put in place)
  • Get a tattoo (Didn’t feel settled enough to start planning this. Maybe next year)
  • Dye my hair a crazy colour (only dyed it normal colours before)
  • Donate blood (managed to squeak in just before I moved)
  • Get a manicure (Seems like an easy one to accomplish but when you’re working a job sporadically they doesn’t allow nail polish...just doesn’t happen)
  • Finish t shirt quilt (hahahahaha. Yeah. Figured this one wasn’t going to happen either. What’s another 2 years at this point?)
  • Vote (yes, I am ashamed I have never done this before)
  • Pay for someone’s coffee (Clearly just never got around to doing this one...)
  • Make another photo book (Was waiting until I was settled to have somewhere to properly send it to. Now I have that and all the time. Should get on it)
  • Take a class (glass blowing, super fun)
  • Go to a professional sporting event (saw the Maple Leafs play for the first time)
  • Take a photo a day for a year (I was doing so well until we got stuck at home. Which I realize was about a month to go, but when I have nothing exciting to take pictures of I tend to forget)
  • Ride a rollercoaster (with the timing of this and being up north all summer again I think I set myself up to fail for this one too)
  • Do (or have signed up for) a race/mud run (even if I had signed up, I don’t think any of them are going ahead anyway)
  • Go to a show at the theatre (if we count Cirque du Soleil, yes. Was supposed to see Wicked the day they closed theatres)
  • Read 30 books (again, something that should have been easy enough. But I managed 10)
  • Watch one new movie a month (got to January, and then life was a bit nuts for February and March and I never managed it)
  • Watch Game of Thrones (finally finished it while in isolation. Yes, the last season was a bit flat in comparison)
  • Order a subscription box (again with the waiting for a proper place to be settled)
  • Find a hobby (still trying to figure this one out)
  • Stay of social media for at least a week (I find myself just aimlessly spending so much time scrolling through social media for basically no reason)
  • Write a letter (or snail mail of some kind) to someone every month (some months it was being mailed on the very last day but it still counts!)
  • Do a puzzle (Didn’t have time to do one before I left and didn’t have one/space to do one once I’ve moved)
  • Buy a new “leather” jacket (tried a couple that just weren’t quite right)
  • Visit where the Stewart’s are from (If I use a blanket statement of they were from Scotland, I made it. Need to take a longer trip up there at some point)
  • Do an escape room (sister and I just barely managed to escape a Harry Potter themed one in Edinburgh. And I mean just barely ~20 seconds to spare)
  • See Home Free again (favourite musical group, traveled to Alaska from the Yukon this summer to see them for the 3rd time)
  • Celebrate 30 somewhere awesome (Fuck you Coronavirus)
Maybe I’ll try another list of 31 things before I turn 31. Either way I’m looking forward to when this isolation is over and I can celebrate with other humans.
